Jay Spearing has been confirmed as the new Bolton captain, with Matt Mills announced as the vice-captain.

Even though Zat Knight was regarded in such a role last season it was the former Liverpool midfielder that so often wore the armband last season and after some consideration Dougie Freedman feels that these are the men for the job.

He told the official website: ‘We’ve built up many leaders in our current group, and Jay and Matt are two of the players who are at the forefront of what we’re trying to do here.

‘They both have a very good feeling for this club and know what is required to step up and lead from the front.’

This really is an honour, as it’s not something that everyone is able to do or achieve in their career.

Such a fact isn’t lost on Spearing, who added: ‘It’s a massive honour to have been named as club captain.

‘Having seen the great players who have previously had this honour, it is a very proud moment in my career.

‘We’ve got a great group of players and staff here, and we’re now all looking forward to the new season.’

Mr Ecky sends his best to the Vital Bolton community, he’s currently not well, he’ll be back as soon as possible and in the meantime, he’s got a staff writer to fill in for him.

If anyone has something to share in the meantime (this gives a genuine Bolton point of view from a Bolton fan!) feel free to fire an email through.

Please include your username so I can put that to it though.
